Three-time Australian world surfing champion attacked by shark on live television.
Mick Fanning this weekend became an internet sensation as he was captured wrestling off the coast of South Africa during the final round of competition. It is the first time a surfing event has been disrupted by an attack of this kind, more amazingly the incident was caught live on camera as the commentators expressed their disbelief at what was occurring in front of everybody’s eyes! Within a matter of hours after the attack, the story had spread around the world through social media, highlighting the power these networks have in the present day.
Whilst waiting for his first wave of the final round, Mick noticed the dreaded fin appear behind him and drag him from his board into the water. Although he was shortly hidden from view by a large wave, the rescue boats were able to quickly respond and retrieve the champion surfer away from further harm.
Once Mick’s safety was confirmed, the internet did what it does best… exploded with meme after meme, poking fun at the incident!
Mick managed to sum up the ordeal in typical Australian fashion...
“I just can’t believe it. I’m just tripping ... To walk away from that, I’m just so stoked.”
